Describe what your organization provides for its customers:
Tomo Drug Testing provides drug and alcohol testing to employers, judicial programs and healthcare systems. Tomo provides federally mandated Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol testing, Drug Free Workplace Program testing, judicial testing and training programs. As a full-service third-party administrator Tomo offers clients a comprehensive drug testing program, from scheduling testing appointments to managing test results and program compliance. Tomo provides clients onsite testing services, which results in reduced staff down time by meeting clients where they are. Our purpose is to promote safe environments that protect and value the lives of others, and we seek to achieve this through staff availability, consistent service delivery and providing a successful collection every time.
Give us a brief history of your business and what makes it unique:
Tomo was founded in 1991 as an onsite DOT and Drug Free Workplace testing company, servicing clients along the I-44 corridor. The convenience, availability and ease of testing has helped Tomo grow to more than 3,000 clients served in five states across the country. In 2015, Tomo began offering drug and alcohol collections for judicial and community-based programs across Missouri. Tomo has industry leading collection procedures for judicial clients and in 2020 did more than 100,000 court based collections. In 2019, we completed two acquisitions, one in Indianapolis and the other in Tulsa, expanding our client base and geographic footprint.
What’s the most exciting recent highlight for your business?
Tomo prides itself on a well-established company culture and set of core values that drive who we are and how we make decisions. A recent highlight of this was our commitment to staffing throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, including special compensation and hazard pay afforded through the PPP. We are extremely proud to have not only maintained all positions, but also added additional jobs resulting from recent growth opportunities.
Where do you hope to see your business in 12 months?
We see ourselves continuing to strategically grow into new regional and national opportunities that leverage our industry relationships and unique operational competencies.
What advice would you offer to someone starting their own small business?
We are huge advocates of always seeking to learn from others. Never assume that you have all the answers – there is so much to gain from others’ unique experiences, challenges and successes, which can be found through mentor and coaching relationships, books, vendors, business partners, and actively engaging and learning from every member of our team.
